I have inherited my mother's zest for live and approaches the business with boundless energy. My motto is to offer hidden treasures at competitive prices with friendly and neighbourly service.
Thirty years ago when Claudia Capelvenere’s mother started CASTELLO del VINO, there were few Italian food and wines available in Hong Kong. Today, the market is entirely different, but her family business is still considered a leader for imported Italian products. Not only do they offer a very comprehensive selection of fine Italian wines in the city, the shop also has a loyal client base of hotels, restaurants and private customers. No wonder Claudia considers her mother to be a remarkable mentor and someone she strives to emulate.
“She was the one who placed Italian wine on the market in Hong Kong,” recalls Claudia. “What I’ve learned about this business was from my mother. Both my parents are still very much involved. It’s a family business, because that’s how it works in most Italy, even in the very large companies.”
Claudia has inherited her mother’s zest for life, and approaches the business with boundless energy. She is passionate about her business and frequently travels to Italy to personally source the latest and best products for her customers to enjoy. Her motto is to “offer hidden treasures at competitive prices with friendly, neighbourly service that inspires clients to keep returning. We are very niche and specialised, and we are very lucky to have such a devoted following.”
The shop on Anton Street was established in 1996 as a showroom to entertain clients, where people can enjoy the many authentic Italian goods CASTELLO del VINO offers. Claudia’s pioneering spirit drove her to make the shop work in a relatively quiet area. With her bright and lively approach to her business, she is the ideal spokesperson for her family business. “I grew up with this business because my mother used to bring home products all the time,” she says. “After university, I came back to Hong Kong and realised that this is the business for me. I love my job!”
Tucked away on the outer fringes of Starstreet, CASTELLO del VINO was the first shop to introduce wine-tasting parties to Hong Kong, and Claudia hopes to revive these popular events in the fall. In fact, previous tastings have proved so popular, she has a waiting list of guests. “Everyone always has such a wild time! The tastings became a gathering party and a great way to meet new people.”
Her father worked in Wanchai for 15 years, so it was natural for CASTELLO del VINO to open its first shop in the Starstreet neighbourhood. Claudia feels the mixture of people is what makes the Starstreet location so unique. Many of her customers have travelled extensively and are delighted to find their favourite Italian gems in Claudia’s shop. “Our customers come from all over Hong Kong, not just this neighbourhood,” she explains. “They are lifestyle people; they enjoy going out, they know their wines and love to experiment.”
Claudia believes the selection of shops is what makes Starstreet such a special neighbourhood. “You can find anything here,” Claudia enthuses. “All the shop owners seem to know each other. The spirit is lovely. It’s very open and friendly, but very neighbourly as well. It’s quaint and cosy and sweet.”
