StarStreet

Candice Suen's approach to life is simple. Her motto is do what you love. That was the thinking behind Yo Mama, a casual place in the heart of Starstreet Precinct that gives yogurt a fresh new spin.

Candice adores the fun and funky yogurt bars dotting the west coast of California, and saw that there was a niche that she could fill with the same concept in Hong Kong. With the help of a food scientist, she developed a deliciously unique recipe. The base is made in Italy and mixed fresh in Hong Kong. While the yogurt comes in two flavours, there are virtually an infinite number of toppings to customise the treat into whatever the customer fancies.

“The yogurt is the base and the toppings are the fun part,” explains Candice. “People can have their yogurt any way they want. Since there is only 0.25 percent fat, it is also good for you. It is really yummy and addictive.”

The Vancouver native is no stranger to new business ventures. After working with a leading Hong Kong lifestyle magazine for a few years, she, with her family, just fell into Triple O's. Their love for the fresh ingredients that went into a Triple O's burger prompted them to launch the idea in Hong Kong in 2003. At the time, there were no gourmet hamburger chains and they found it initially difficult to get their foot in the door. But they persevered. Now, there are six Triple O's branches in Hong Kong, one in Bangkok and one in Seoul. Even Chief Executive Donald Tsang is her customer, infamously leaving Triple O's hungry one day because he couldn’t find a free table.

“Location is the most important thing, especially the first one,” she believes. “It tells everyone what kind of brand you have.” She hopes to achieve the same success with Yo Mama, and has carefully chosen its location on Wing Fung Street of Starstreet Precinct. Surrounded by a bevy of established as well as up and coming restaurants for all budgets, she feels that it is a destination hang out for office workers, nearby residents or anyone who want to treat themselves to a tailor made dessert that happens to be healthy.

“One of our customers buys his yogurt from us and brings it to the restaurant where he is dining,” says Candice with a smile. “He asks them to put the yogurt into their freezer for him to have after his meal as dessert. And they do it!”

Candice feels that Starstreet Precinct is her perfect place for Yo Mama because it is a one-stop lifestyle destination where people can spend an afternoon shopping, snacking and browsing for offbeat or one of a kind treasures.
